Where to Shop for Sustainable Dresses
The right sustainable dress is a closet staple you’ll reach for when you don’t know what to wear or just want something comfy and loose. The sustainable dress brands in this post will have you covered for casual maxi dresses, cocktail dresses and summer frocks.
What’s a sustainable dress?
The most sustainable dress is the one you have hanging in your wardrobe! But my guess is the reason you’re reading this post is you want to add something to your collection.
Next stop is online second hand marketplaces like Depop, Vinted, Velstaire Collective or Ebay. Of course you also have your local charity shop or car boot sale.
Even though what you own and secondhand is always the most sustainable choice, I do get asked where I buy my sustainable dresses from. So to help you out, I’ve put together a list of 10 sustainable retailers and brands that sell ethical and sustinably made clothing. They’re not all perfect, but they’re the ones making efforts and changes in their brand or mission, and the ones that have stood the test of time in my wardrobe.

The best sustainable dress brands
Seasalt
I’ve been a fan of Seasalt for a while now. They are a Cornish brand born and bred, and have been going since 1981. In 2005, they made history by becoming the first fashion company to receive Soil Association certification to the Global organic textile standard (GOTS) for their organic products. They also work with Reskinned, and will give you up to £25 towards something new if you trade in your pre-loved Seasalt pieces. Full disclosure, I have partnered with Seasalt in the past. I love that a lot of their materials are consciously sourced, and I live in their dresses every Summer.

Nobody’s Child
London-based Nobody’s Child’s 2023 collection was made using over 95% organic, lower impact or recycled materials. I love their dresses, especially those in classical styles that won’t go out of fashion.

Linen Fox
Linen Fox create timeless hand made linen clothes for women including maternity and extended size ranges all using Oeko-tex certified linen. Twenty fashion artisans work together under one roof to create garments “for well lived days”. I have many Linen Fox dresses, they’re well made, comfortable and effortlessly stylish. Would 100% recommend if you’re after an everyday linen dress. One of their main selling points for me is that you can order each dress or style in whichever linen fabric or colour you like, plus they offer custom sizing.

Meadows
London born Meadows make romantic and feminine clothing inspired by Victoriana, prairie-style, and folklore. They are committed to make clothes which are made in a safe, ethical environment where working conditions are fair. They use Oeko-Tex certified printing inks and are currently in the process of moving their products into Global Organic Textile Standard certified organic textiles.

Faithfull
Certified B Corp company Faithfull is based out of Bali and Australia. I have a few gorgeous summer dresses from this brand which I absolutely adore. The quality, fabrics and nod to vintage patterns and designs are so fun and super comfy too. As they’re in the higher price range, look out for their sales as I got all of mine reduced!

OMNES
London based sustainable womenswear company Omnes create beautiful affordable clothing with the planet in mind. They work with a small, carefully selected set of producers to ensure that OMNES designs are created ‘as sustainably as currently possible’. To show that fashion can be good quality, affordable AND responsible. I love their slinky colourful numbers.

Joanie
Now Joanie is a brand that I’ve had my eye on for a a while. They’re all about re-imagining vintage styles with the idea to encourage people to ditch trends, and instead buy less and buy better. Their aim is to create future vintage – dresses that you can keep for years and years. They’re also a Certified B Corporation.
