How to Get the English Country Cottage Style at Christmas

There’s something magical about preparing your home for Christmas — the soft glow of fairy lights, the scent of greenery, and those little details that make a space feel extra cosy.

We live in a traditional English country cottage style Georgian home, I like to decorate to reflect that. I want it to feel timeless and also be sustainable, using natural touches and traditional Christmas decorations I return to year after year. • In small spaces: Tuck clippings into jars or bottles for simple displays.

Ribbons are one of my favourite ways to add elegance and a bit of personality to Christmas decorations.

Sustainability tip: Opt for natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or velvet, which can be reused again and again. Neutral tones or classic deep reds and greens will never go out of style, making them versatile year after year.

It’s easy for Christmas to feel over the top, but decorating can be beautiful and sustainable.

• Reuse yearly: Lights, baubles, ribbons, and wreath bases can all be stored for next year. This year I reused some dried flowers and just added simple pinecones into the mix. You could do this with anything, adding dried oranges or ribbons.

• Avoid plastic tinsel: Natural greenery and fabric garlands are just as festive.

• Forage & repurpose: Pinecones, prunings, and even dried seed heads from the garden make wonderful decorations.
