Easy Vegan Hash Browns
Vegan Hash Browns, an affordable savoury dish to start the day!
What you’ll need to make easy vegan hash browns
- onion
- potatoes
- carrot
- olive oil
- cornflour
- cumin
- paprika
- mixed herbs
- spring onion

How to make vegan hash browns
Finely chop your onion (or grate), grate your potatoes and carrot.
Add your veg to a large mixing bowl. Grab a teatowel, and add the veg mixture into the teatowel. Squeeze the excess water from the veg mix into the mixing bowl. Discard the water.
Put the veg mix back into the mixing bowl and season with your spices, salt and pepper. Drizzle in the olive oil and stir through the cornflour. Test the mixture and if it’s too wet, add more cornflour. If too dry, add more oil.
Once mixed, shape the hash into 6-8 hash balls, place on a plate and then gently press them into patties.
In a large frying pan, heat up some oil. Once hot, add your patties to the pan, cooking each side for 3-5 minutes until golden brown, and then turning.
Cook until golden brown on both sides, and serve your vegan hash browns with some sliced spring onion on top (plus some ketchup!).
If you don’t have cornflour, use ordinary flour.
These vegan hash browns are super affordable, at only £0.61 in total, making it around 10p per patty.
Season this how you like and get experimental with spices, or what to enjoy with your hash browns! They sit perfectly alongside a vegan full English!

This looks like the vegan version of a Persian dish called kotlet. Looks good!

Can you freeze them if you don’t want to cook all at once?
Nathalie
yes! I freeze mine. It is not exactly the same recipe but very similar, so it should work. Just make sure it is stored airtight. 🙂

Yum!!!
Living some years in an Eastern European country has made me fall
in love with potato cakes / has browns / bramboraky! Will be trying your recipe soon.
The wonderful is that they can freeze well too as otherwise I always eat them all 😀
I too have an eco-friendly blog full of articles and vegan recipes.

It was so delicious thank you! I had sweet potato at home, I used that and added some oriental spices too like graham massala, it was yummmm! Good that you mentioned the muffin thingy, I had one Muffin baking mold which I had never used before haha it was perfect for this 🙂 I just added olive oil to the paste and a little butter inside the tray so I could avoid having a too oily result. Thank you for the inspiration Madeleine as always. You are my favourite for several month now <3
